Doodles

Just some random doodles I did while at work, which were cross posted on my main blog.

I didn't have his ref sheet so his proportions (on both sheets) are off; all in all though he's still a leggy and army creature. Something that will be interesting to explore, especially since his arms aren't as human in proportion compared to Sonic's or most other Mobian's on my list. his humerus and hand anatomy is closer to a canine's.

Antoine's Apartment

Yay! Technical boring design stuff! How fun is this?!

But on a serious note, doing these kinds of things is important to me, mostly because I'm neurotic and feel as though planning things out as much as possible makes the story and visuals more consistent as well as save time in the long run.

I'm not going to design every little element in his apartment because a lot of the more simple aspects can be drawn on the spot. But these more detailed objects are utensils he interacts with a lot in one portion of the story so I felt it was necessary to nail down their approximate look down from the get go as well as plan his house layout.

Now I can move onto his jalopy Vespa! Then I have to design his third outfit and the exterior of his building as well as the basic elements of his block. :B Maybe I'm putting too much thought into this... but it will be worth it! :D

Environmental Sketches

I did more of these on my main blog but since they're not sonic related most of them are staying there for the time being.

There's actually a lot of environments and nit picky little details I will be exploring with each of these but for now they're "jot down the idea" conceptual type pieces.

Out of all the most complex environments it would have to be Acorn's kingdom which is surrounded by Knothole Woods which is located within a huge labyrinth of woods that's about two to three states deep, so it's flippin huge.

The palace is a ziggurat shaped structure that is powered by clean energy produced by a chaos emerald located underneath in a pool of molten metals kept down at the core of the building. These same metals are also used to produce small power rings that are used as batteries of sorts for the local inhabitants.

I wanted the palace to be secured and hard to find. So although things aren't really to scale here, the slopping trees are actually animalistic beings that are genetically geared to protecting anything from coming near the chaos emerald. Which is why villagers of this area have to use hidden underground tunnels to get in and out of Acorn's metropolis.  Light is also limited and scattered within the area, much like a rain forrest.

From there, the forrest is a deep canopy inhabited by sentinels and then by knothole villagers with the exterior inhabited by various goblin races. Although the two dislike each other, they tend to maintain a truce.

Most peoples who try an navigate through any part of this forest tend to die from starvation or being killed by the local flora and fauna.

Not much to say about this. :B Antoine rides a bike because he's dirt poor. So expect a lot of sketches of bikes once I'm done with his ref sheet.

Sonic Turn Sheets 2.0

Hey there guys! I was going to be pumping out a shit ton of stuff Sonic related but then I got the sick from a little cousin of mine, or someone... I BLAME SOMEONE. On that note however, turn sheets! This will most likely be Sonic's finale look.

As you can tell from the above, Sonic (as are all Mobians) are genetically composed of human and various animal DNA that give them the appearance of an anthropomorphic singular species despite having various genetic material or little to no relation to the perceived species. In the case of his blue fur, it's a color morph originating to distant feliform DNA which contains the genetic coding for blue fur phenotypes. "Hedgehogs" have a much more obvious mutagen of the gene compared to "cats" and their fur hues tend to be cool colors such as blues, purples, greys, and whites.

The insectivore and rodent based Mobians are the shortest mammalians topping out at around 3-4 feet. In the case of Sonic, he is actually one of the tallest in his group toping out close to four feet. Unlike Antoine, who has four toes per foot and much shorter proximal, middle, and distal phalanges, Sonic has longer portions of that area along with a fifth toe. His hands are also more common to his species grouping in that his metacarpals and proximal phalanges are shorter creating "mousy" hands.

He carries instincts similar to his hedgehog heritage in that he will roll or prickle up when experiencing a negative emotion or turn his head downward and "saw." His "species" tends to thrive in warm climates such as islands and deserts.

There's an "oopsie" or two I need to correct but I will do it tomorrow, lol...

PS: Few Mobians have last names in the more human or Overlander sense and tend to carry last names typical to their "species" or visual grouping. They, instead of IDing each other based on last names, consider first and middle names more important.

Sonic is a bit of a contrast when it comes to how his species acts. Although it is noted that hedgehogs are quite brazen and are slow to admit personal errors, they are generally very wary and forward thinking in their actions in order to prevent the former. Depending on the pedigree, this is either a genetic or a learned trait.

Level 1

Short story time! But ti does contain spoilers. :U

He looks normal here, because Overlanders don't mutate until they're in their mid to late teens. He's in his early tweens here so he looks pretty normal, except for the black tongue and gums. :B

+ + + + + +

Beep, beep beep, beep, beep… His eyes darted, but there was nothing.

Beep, beep, beep, beep… He felt a chill coming from the left of him, and a soft, almost comforting and familiar warmth from underneath his hand.

Beep, beep, his hand rose to his face. He halted, from the hall he heard the rolling of wheels on a smooth surface, moaning and brisk commands shooting down as he darted his eyes frantically, still noting.

Amongst the clatter a soft gait could be heard. Shoes, he knew it was the sound of shoes, nice ones; not like the ones he had. Maybe this being's shoes even had shoelaces, or sturdy soles, the boy was momentarily preoccupied by the perceived comfort these shoes must have had for their owner.

"Hello, boy."

The boy didn't respond.

"How are you feeling today."

"My name is not boy." He replied curtly. Paper flipped clumsily as he darted his eyes, still nothing. "Well we will have to call you boy until you give us a name."

"Where am I?" He heard the sound of something thin and light falling on a cushioned surface. "I cannot tell you that unless you give us a name." The boy's mouth pursed with a queer grin, "why so secretive?" A short pause, "there are no secrets here, we just want your name."  The boy smelled the room, felt the rhythms of the people in there with them, there was much whispering and ginger movements and he could feel the man's feverish heartbeat in the breath that hit his face.

"You found my blaster and want to know how it works." A stifled silence entered the room as the boy listened for a response. "To be more precise, we want to know how a child got access to it." The man finally responded.

"You mean, you want to know how I made it." There was slight laughter in the room. "You're laughing, but you don't even know how to use it, and you know it doesn't have a serial." The room became silent again. "Plus it has technological capacities not located within our borders." The man's voice became serious, "And nothing like it has been made since the hundred year war… How did you come across writings for such a technology."

The boy looked around, still nothing, "Well it could be easier if I could see in here, seeing would be nice, but they ripped out my eyes. Might trust you more with eyes, but I already don't - so whatever." He heard the man shifting his position with agitation."You mean the Mobians." The man responded. The boy paused, "……. yea. Did you know they actually bathe?"

"Boy, how did you come across the writings for this technology…"

"Dolt, I didn't… I found an image of a man on a galonae like beast - a statue. In his hand he had a gun type thing. So I built it."

"You can't just build something that complex with no direction… Especially if the technology is dead - no reference. You needed -"

"You can if you're a god." The boy smiled even more, "I don't need books or algorithms to build what I see in my head. Or a calculator."

The man scoffed, "you can't even read!"

"Does a bird need to read to understand aerodynamics? Does a termite need to understand pedology or the cat physics?"  The doctor recoiled, "They're beasts, of course not!"

The boy's mouth became stiff, "they're savants." His hand absently crept against the grooves of the covers until it came across something hallow and light, they became preoccupied and his face calmed."Give me eyes and I will explain my gun to you."

"Give me your name first."

"You know you can't use the technology without me, did you try already? I made a special key." He began playing with a notch located in the back of the hollow object until it could be twisted no further. "And killing or torturing me would do no good, I don't feel pain like most of us." He let the object writhe in his hands. "So give me eyes and I will give you my clubhouse."

A hand snapped to someone in the distance as they walked away briskly. "How about this, give us a name for your eyes, and your services for your freedom, Overlander…"

The boy clasped the figure in his hands, preventing it from moving as the mechanisms halted. "So you're not me. But you smell so much like me. Interesting…" He  gently caressed the toy, "You're not a threat, but I like games. Do you like games? I do…. So this is level one, and player two needs a name. What is yours?" The man readjusted himself, "Prometheus."

The boy's face brightened.

 "Ivo. Let the games begin."

St. John Family Busts

For some reason I never feel comfortable moving on with a present character's plot role unless I establish the parent's. I consider that a good thing because it makes the plot less "random" and things connect better. That muscular dude up there is Ian, Geoffrey's dad. His goofy and submissive personality is based off my grandfather (who was murdered by my grandmother) The condition of his eyes is based off my  aunt who has albinism so he has nystagmus. Despite this he's a very good marksman but outside of that he's very clumsy.

Skunk on the left is Geoffrey's mother. Her narcissistic, OCD, and mentally abusive personality is based off of said grandmother mentioned above. Their relationship (Ian/Eli) are similar to my grandparent's in real life, except for that whole murder thing.

These characteristics rub off on her son (far left) but despite being an asshole like his mother, he does have a soft spot for people he cares about and makes it known, more or less.

SKUNKS. They're assholes in real life, and in my universe to. Hate, hate hate hate, so much hate skunks have...

Oh, his mom's name is Elizabeth "Eli."

Jules & Bernadette

One of the areas that I've started tackling more during my hiatus was the hedgehogs, they are the main species after all. ;) Below are some of my first attempts tackling Bernadette "Bernie" and Jules.

I hope that it's more apparent where Sonic gets certain attribute from and since Mobians in my world are chimeras between people and different animals, some have more hedgie attributes than others depending on the line and location of that "hedgehog" Mobian. There's a reason for this in a veeeeery distant past I have written out, but that is for later of course. :) Much much later.... like - near the end later.

They were aged down here to compare their designs to Sonic's But in reality they're in their 30's-40's in the present time of my comic.

Jules and his brother are engineers, more specifically they're second hands to their father, Regis. Jules and his brother work for his father's shop, repairing broken machinery on their home island. Despite this, both have a heavy interest in robotics. Jules focuses more on mechanics and Charles more on AI.

Jules is snarky and a bit of prankster much to his calmer and more perceptive brother's chagrin.

Bernadette is a tinker. She's a housewife but is very skilled at fixing things as well, and is often found in her husband's inherited shop. She is a bit more stoic and focused on doing things effectively the first time and is great at time management. Which is why her father in law, Regis, takes such a strong liking to her. ;) Don't tell her husband she's taller than him, it makes him puff with agitation...

Aaaaaand I'm Back!

Whoa... I know, I've been absent from here for - what, five months? Five months!!! How crazy is that?!

Well, the explanation to that is... life. Life had occurred. Another big project of mine has taken up a lot of my time and energy and promotions at work kind of got in the way of this project temporarily. Although I've been drawing art related to this project and posting elsewhere, this blog is supposed to be the main base of this project; and no, I haven't dropped it. ;) If anything, I've been focusing more on story, background characters, and working on environments. All of which will be posted here in the near future.

Until I organize those posts however, have some pieces that were done mostly for fun. :) Although some of them do have a slight back story.

These contain some spoilers so don't read if you don't want that!

In my universe, Sonic, Antoine, and the Freedom Fighters do not know each other nor do they live in the same lands. Sonic and his adopted brother, Tails, live on a tropical floating island; while Antoine lives in an inclosed oasis in a desert and the FF live in a massive biotech forest. Well, slight correction, Antoine does know the Freedom Fighters, but has not seen them in a long time and specifically chooses not to for reasons I will not spoil. ;)

Despite being one of the shortest and stockiest of the bunch, he's actually the most physically flexible. With Sonic and Antoine being equal matches in slightly different areas.

I've always thought it would be kind of cool to have Max as the energetic one and Armand as the reclusive and more quiet of the trio, that trio being: Max, Armand, Ian. Armand's personality and past are heavily inspired by my mother's young personality and most of her past, which actually builds a large plot element with Armand in the future that is more close to the present.

But this piece takes place in a past before any real troubles affected Max or Armand and they were, for the most part, kids without a care in the world. In this particular piece, this is before they become close friends.

This was drawn after visiting a friend of mine from Dreamworks. His children were such a pleasure that their present and my past have been molded to form Antoine's before things end up going horribly wrong in the future for him and everyone involved. :(

I've only drawn Bunnie twice, and my has she changed... Odd that she ended up looking like my good friend, Dana. Accident, I promise!

Bunnie has been renamed Jackie and is a hare/rabbit for many serious puns... Jack Rabbit, "Bunnie" Rabbit, and she likes hair. Haaaaaaah - I'm lame.

While I was away I've apparently been evolving. For the better though! So yaaaaaay. Compare the old art to the new. His back story changed a lot and I do mean a LOT. When I eventually get to this point of hte comic, and it has passed, I will probably go into detail how much his personality, purpose, and past have changed from my original concept. He's normally not this emo. But in this particular case he has a good reason for sobbing. Again, it's one of those plot elements I wont entirely spoil. But this conceptual incident takes place a few days before Sonic and he meet.

Sally Acorn Anatomy Chart

The amount of time I've had to dedicate to this blog is very miniscule. ;_; This is mostly due to personal projects and promotions at work. Sucks up aaaaall my spare time.

Anyways, have a front clothed and nude ref of Sally Acorn. I will upload this with more information and the back view when I have time.

I need to work on Geoffrey's clothed view. Antoine, Geoffrey, Armand, Bunnie, and he have the most complex clothing and more than one suit.

Jacque & Other Tidbits

I've been super busy with work, two personal projects (outside of this one) and a few other things so sorry for the lack of updates. ;_; I hope to rectify that in the next coming weeks.

For the sake of making sense of a child spawn between a rabbit and a coyote and because my universe makes such an offspring more plausible; I decided to revamp Jacque's design a bit for funsies.

He's a fencer in my universe and loves the sport. So he has helmet hair from constantly wearing his eye guard.

Also for funsies and comparison, here's what's finished of the D'Collette family.

Antoine, Armand, Antoinette.

And because I don't a ref for Jackie (Bunnie) get it... Jack Rabbit? Lololol.... Which has another double meaning since she loves to groom her hair, I'm so full of horrible entendres... And because I forgot to upload this. :B Here you go.

And I also forgot to upload Dagre, Armand's father.

Tails Anatomy Chart

This was just a teaser shot of what I was working on based on this post. But all the final charts of Tails will be posted on this entry. :) Still have to do a chart showing his clothes; which wont be hard seeing how he only wears shoes and gloves, haha...

12-9-11 :
Was going to do a back view of his clothes but they're not all that necessary due to the simplicity of their design. Either way; finished Tails reference! :D Now I have to finish Geoffrey. :B

Progress : Tails Body Chart

Super huge thanks to my friend, MITC for giving me some much needed crits along the way. They're a pro at anatomy.... don't believe me? Check out their art!

This is just showing the progress of what I like to call "tone it up, tone it down." TIU-TID for short. Which means I start off with a heavily detailed anatomical study of what I want the character the approximately look like; and slowly tone certain elements down without the hopes of loosing the main points learned from the original sketch.

I was going to work on Geoffrey fist but decided to go with Tails since he is the smallest and it would be interesting to see me draw a younger Mobian that adheres to some aspects of the official designs while taking my own twist on him. This is still a wip; so things like the weirdness going on in the legs will be fixed - haha...

Anatomical Differences

The anatomy is, of course, meant to represent character demeanor and species. So below are my more finalized concepts of the characters in that respect. These will be cleaned up with front and back references. :) Ignore out of character elements. These were doodled at work with out my typical references lol.

Tails:
He's the second youngest of the group and has a little buddah belly. Personally I think it makes him look more childlike as well as dorky for some unexplanable reason which is what I was going for. Plus he spends more time tinkering than going outside and having fun. ;) Also his hair, tails, and cheek tufts are poorly kept.

Geoffry:
As explained here, skunks are stocky animals. So therefore, stocky Geoffrey! This would get him in trouble since he has to be a silent sniper. but thankfully he has the longest shooting range of any Mobian. You'll notice that he's slightly curvacious as well which is atypical in most Mobian species save for rodents and feral cats. But is more common than what's seen in Overlander and human species.

Sally:
She's been problematic. I to want her to have a slight pudge but I also don't want people to mistake her as "fat." In the refined look she will have a smaller bust. And the legs will be fixed to have a slightly more feminine stance despite her tendency to slouch. But this is pretty much her look.

Antoine:
He's the thinnest considering his height and again, the tallest (unless you count his father who's a smidgen taller). His shoulder blades and ribs are also the most prominent close up and without clothes. Some might mistake him as anorexic, but he just has an extremely high metabolism.

Batty Foxes

Not sure what's going on here. All I know is that I wanted Rouge to look like an actual bat. Also, she may or may not have a brief appearance in my story. Depends.

Still don't have a wacom so more sketches via sketchbook! When it comes to anatomy I tend to tone up each character to figure out how everything would be placed or exaggerated then town down to match the other styles. Thus explaining the super detail going on with Rouge and Tails here.

Feet & Overlanders

Slightly older Jacque (18)and young Manic (11) as seen from here. They're not in the main story whatsoever and appear only in minor bits of side stories.

And some random studies on Mobian feet possibilities. Because they're humanoids in my universe they have several cross overs with human anatomy. Although these charts are not absolute so some elements can be broken because of it.

Robotnik and Nate Morgan. I tend to draw people more realistic then tone them down to match the more toonish style of the Mobians. Doing them this way helps me get the facial structure right though.

Robotnik needs a wider jaw so that his creepy as hell smile is more prominent and foreboding. It's what makes his character, so yea - need to work on that lol. You will also notice that most of the Overlanders in my universe are cybernetic to some extent.

Sticky Doodles

Some more sticky note doodles done while at work. :) Still getting the kinks out of Tails. Decided to make his hair wilder and more free to make him look less reserved and more youthful.

The sketch to the right and below him are of a fan OC who's an Overlander and henchmen of Snivley (on the right). Snivley's position is a lot more important than it was in the comics initially and with everything else in this reboot; a lot darker.

Rotor! I've been needing to draw him. So here's an attempt. Might give him less neck fat. For the sake of contrast of a typical walrus I'm going to make him chubby but not fat. Lol... maybe?

PS! To see the images full size - click on them once then right click and select "view image." :D

Tails Evolution

Tails has been the easiest to fine; but he also went through several changes when I was in the process of trying to figure out what style to go with; and how to integrate the style in the other characters. As with almost any revamp I've done I wanted to draw inspiration from various sects of the official media to show my appreciation for each creator's take on Tails through his 20 year existence. :)

This is my second concept of him; the first one has yet to be found but when I do find it this post will be edited. His build was a bit more blocky and closer to older / newer depictions of him in the game. But then when the tone of my stories changed calling for more age appropriate anatomy; his entire eventually changed as well.

Compared to all the other males Tails lacks certain general masculine phenotypes: lack of thicker black or brown lips, thick brows, thinner lashes, and thinner brow ridge. He's more feminine in his look and it shows almost through his entire age up until he's an old  fart.

Sticky Doodles

Well, I ended up turning down the large commission for various reasons; mostly a disagreement on pay. Too bad... but other opportunities will come! :D

Other than that news, been super busy with work, freelance, and secret group projects I've been working on. But here's some doodles I've been spitting out on super small sticky notes while I take mini breaks at work.

Geoffrey, Antoine, Sonic, Tails, Antoinette (FOC), and Robotnik. Tail's design has changed to be a bit more catlike. You'll also see that when he smiles his top canines show just a little bit. That's because red foxes have the longest canines of any canid. Also gave him am ore slender muzzle and a more egg shaped head.

Still need to do ref sheets for many mobians, humans, ect.

Peace! ♥ *goes to work on commissions*

Oh, will update this blog with more stickies and hopefully, more finished works.

Shapes And Sizes : Antoine

Antoine was a bit tricky, mostly because all Mobians regardless of their species are generally shorter than Overlanders and Humans. For those of you don't know; there are three races of sapient beings in the Archie universe; humans, Overlanders, and Mobians. Humans (oops nvm on the people) and Mobinas are generally benign while Overlanders (human subspecies) are generally aggressive. So when it comes to height i tried to keep to a standard of how tall Mobians would be; according to the comics most of them are around 4 feet tall. Antoine however is a rule (badumksh) breaker standing at around 5 feet.
Another reason he's a rule breaker is because he has the most outfits that he goes between. C#1 is what he wears most of the time and what (if I wrote an entire comic) he would wear about 20-50% of the story.  He doesn't attain C#2 until later and there's a valid reason for that; but I wont spoil it. ;) I had to do some research on C#2 to make it more believable. It's based on British, Russian and French general uniforms mostly in design.

And just for comparison.
